Murchison Centenary celebrations

Alternative NameMurchison Centennial 1976DescriptionFrom April 1st to April 4th, 1976, parades, concerts, races, shearing demonstrations and other events were held around the district to celebrate 100 years since the first use of the Hope Saddle Route in 1876. It was also 100 years since the founding of Murchison County.

Keith Hamblyn visited Murchison for the celebrations and took these photographs of some of the events and the people who attended them.

Born in New Plymouth in 1926, Keith Roland Hamblyn worked as a journalist in his late teens, and for thirty five years was employed as a hospital photographer. He was also a photographer for the police, taking photographs of crime and accident scenes. In 1949 Keith married Valerie Clover Lester of Murchison. Upon his death in 2014 Keith's extensive collection of slides and photographs was gifted by his family to the Ian Matheson City Archives in Palmerston North.
