However, evidence has been provided by a family member that William was illegitimate. His birth father was in fact William Webb, and his mother was Helen Christina McGregor born in 1854 in NSW, Australia. William Webb, a fruiter, admitted parentage of William and William's sister Florence in divorce proceedings. This has since been backed-up by DNA testing of Florence's descendants.
William McGregor's six siblings included Florence, George McGregor and Blanche Inwood, nee McGregor. Sadly, many of the children ended up in children's homes. Blanche in St Mary's Girls School (the Convent School) in Nelson.
