Anna Hill's Album

Description

DescriptionAnna Hill's album is part of the Waimea South Collection. It contains photographs taken in the late 1800s, of members of the Silcock and Hill families, as well as other Brightwater and Wakefield people.

Most of the photographs are Cartes de visite, or small inexpensive photographs printed on card. A number of them have the names of Nelson photographic studios on the front or back of the card, so were taken locally. Some of the cards are very ornate with multiple colours and designs, but most are very plain.

Anna's album was purchased in February 1898, for 6 pound 10 shillings.

Anna Hill was born in November 1852. She was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Ann Hill (nee Ovens). Her siblings included Thomas, Quinton, Jabez, William, and Benjamin, and two sisters, Mary (later married to Richard Palmer) and Ellen (later married to George Silcock). When she was a child her parents ran the Holly Bush Hotel in Brightwater. This was situated beside the Wairoa river, and before the bridge across the river was built, so her parents also had the licensee to ferrying travellers across the river. Anna was for many years a Sunday School teacher at St. Paul’s Church, Brightwater. She died in July 1937 and is buried in the St. Paul's Churchyard. Maureen Barton, who inherited the album from her great uncle Ted Silcock has written a note about the album. It is glued in the front of the album. "Ellen Hill (married George Johnson Silcock) later in life had a stroke and was bedridden. She died in 1914. Anna Hill her youngest sister, most probably nursed her, hence the album of Hills and Silcocks.
