Private Julius Huffam's war diary 1915

Description

DescriptionA transcription of the diary belonging to Julius Huffam (Valentine Julius Blake Huffam) who served in the New Zealand Medical Corps, Field Ambulance during the First World War, starting as a cook. The original diary is held at the Motueka District Museum but is in a fragile condition.

Julius arrived in Trentham Camp on 13 May 1915. In this diary he records the day to day life of the training camp. After training Julius travelled to Egypt and he recounts what life was like on the ship and on arrival in Egypt.

In his diary Julius often mentions the food eaten and the quality or cost of it. He also frequently mentions health care, treatments and his own poor health. In 1919 he died of complications from influenza and is buried in Cologne, Germany.

There are also descriptions of death, illness and other content that may be upsetting to some people. Children and young adults please check with a parent or trusted adult.
