Renée Thomas (Ngāti Rarua, Ngāti Toa, Te Atiawa, Ngāti Tama, Ngāi Tahu) is employed by Wakatū Incorporation as the Kaitiaki of the whenua at Mārahau, at the entrance to the Abel Tasman National Park (ATNP). Renee delivers her mihi, describes growing up in Te Tauihu and moving to Mārahau. She describes her role as Kaitiaki of the whenua at Mārahau – what it means, what she does, who it involves. She describes her daily hikoi along the beach checking for erosion, kōiwi (ancestral human bones), and taonga, and the tikanga for dealing with taonga or kōiwi if found. Renée discusses the link between whenua, whakapapa and whenua, how she maintains relationships with the Mārahau locals, the highlights of her job, the history of iwi in the ATNP, her thoughts on the name ‘Abel Tasman National Park’. Renée discusses the importance of respecting urupā and taonga in the ATNP, her thoughts on the future role of iwi in the ATNP, the difference between kaitiakitanga and ownership of land, the value of the maramataka (Maori lunar calendar).
