Wakefield Village News

Alternative NameVillage NewsDescriptionThe News was an excellent and well supported community newsletter that was published monthly for 28 years from June 1983 till August 2011.

During this time the newsletter had three Editors who were Don Hutcheson, Arnold Clark and Rachel Stokes.

It also had a number of name changes and different layouts and formats. Today it still exists as the Window on Wakefield.

The News carried a wealth of information about what was going on in the community. There were Editorials, often provoking vigorous discussion. One such topic was about the Wakefield School swimming pool. Should it have a roof built over it? Strong views were expressed both for and against but in the end the roof was built, and the complex has been a great and popular asset for the people of Wakefield.

Clubs and organisations advertised their activities. Businesses advertised their wares and there were notices for buy and sell. Sport and drama events were highlighted.

Many people assisted the Editor on a regular monthly basis and a large team of locals walked the streets putting the News into the residents' letter boxes.

Editions from 1983 to 2003 have been digitised and will be uploaded to this page during February, March and April 2023. Physical copies of Windows on Wakefield from 2013 onward are available in the Richmond Library's Local History Collection.
