Monster shark caught by Mr Crapper

Description

DescriptionA shark caught by fisherman James Crapper in the entrance to the harbour. The shark was put on public display at his business premises.

According to an article in the Colonist on 18 October 1916 the shark was 12ft long (about 3.1/2 metres), 7ft in girth, and weighed over half a ton (about 450kg). The local papers described the shark as "A monster shark, of the taniwha species, which is known as the most ferocious kind".

The shark "was well known to the fishermen in the Bay. and is stated to have attacked dinghies on several occasions, besides getting away with many valuable lines."

A Southland Times (Invercargill) news article on the 17 October 1916 refers to the shark as the "notorious Blue Peter", and says it was captured by James Crapper.

Beside the shark is what may be a Spiny Dogfish, possibly used to show the size in comparison to the size of the shark. CreatorF. N.
