Richmond War Memorial Gardens

Description

DescriptionThe Richmond War Memorial was relocated from the Old Richmond Town Hall and Memorial Building to the park and officially opened on ANZAC Day, 25 April 1988.

At the Cambridge Street entrance to the park is a memorial archway with marble memorial plaques dedicated to the fallen. The plaque on the left as you enter the park lists names from the First World War, while the one on the right commemorates those from the Second World War.

At the far end of the park, a brick platform features plaques dedicated to the Korean, Malaya, Borneo, and South Vietnam wars, along with plaques from the original 1930-1950s memorial.

Under a tree is another small plaque installed by the RSA commemorating VJ Day 1995, the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Honouring those who served New Zealand overseas and at home, and in memory of those who laid down their lives.
