Ventura airplane in Queen Street in 1971

DescriptionA Lockheed RB034 Ventura aircraft being towed up Queen Street on its way to Port Nelson. Warring’s Garage is on the right of the photo partially obscured by the plane. Frances Ashton writes: 'The Ventura was brought by tender from Government Surplus by my father James Russ of Appleby after the war, 1949, from Nelson Airport where it was towed to our farm at Appleby, where it stayed in the back yard until 1971. It was purchased firstly for the big tyres that made an excellent trailer to feed green feed to stock - did not sink into the mud. It was a great source of bits and pieces – hydraulic rams, nuts and bolts, etc. for my engineering minded Dad and uncle. It was a great play place for us children. We went on many a flying mission. It was stripped of its propellers before being transported to Auckland where it was restored and displayed at MoTaT (Museum of Transport and Technology) in Auckland where they got one motor running again.'Date1971Subject/KeywordAeroplanesWorld War, 1939-1945AcknowledgementsDonated by Frances Ashton.
