Threading Connections Tuia te Hononga Community Quilt

Alternative NameTasman District Libraries Community Quilt Project 2025DescriptionWith the launch of Tuku25 (a Cultural Heritage Festival) in March 2025, we invited people from Te Tauihu/Top of the South to contribute a fabric 5-inch square piece of creativity towards a Community Quilt (quilts still use imperial measurements).

The theme: "Threading Connections Tuia te Hononga".
Hononga - (noun) union, connection, relationship, bond; joining place, link.
Tuia - (verb) to sew, thread on a string, thread; to lash, lace, bind; to put through (the arm or hand through a loop), arm in arm.

We asked people to tell us what it is that makes them feel connected to this marvellous place we live in. And that is what they did. We received 54 amazing, individual pieces which help us to reflect on what makes Te Tauihu special to us.

These 54 blocks have been crafted into a unique community quilt by Tākaka based textile artist Christine Richards. Chris also created our 2020 Lockdown Quilt and 2022 Origins Whakapapa Quilt.
